Personality
Short: She's determined to a fault, naive socially, socially awkward, experienced with surviving on her own, gentle, sympathetic towards those who have even done bad things.
Probably the most notable trait of Eudora is that she has a ridiculous desire to accomplish whatever she's set her mind to, no matter what happens to her in the process. She's determined to a fault, often hurting herself because she tried to hard. From the simple thing like plucking an apple from the highest branch that she just can't quite reach all the way to making some amazing jump across a frozen river; her sense of self preservation isn't strong enough to keep her from doing stupid things. It'd be a miracle that she'd lived as long as she had, except that she put her determination to staying alive. If not she probably would have died long before.
Another reason why it's such a shocker that the mare has made it this far is because she's so damn naive. If a stallion told her that he loved her upon the first day of meeting her, she'd blinding follow him back home. This isn't to say she doesn't have any experience. She has quite a bit of that, it's just lost on social interactions. Give the mare a harsh winter and she could easily survive, or drop her in a desert and watch her find her way out. Those sorts of situations are fine, but the second social interaction is thrown in, she loses the upper hand.
She's typically a gentle soul and doesn't appreciate violence or death; though she would fight if she had to. She tries her best to keep her mind entirely open, to accept new ideas and to try and understand where other horses are coming from. She does find it difficult sometimes, but still strives to find sympathy with even the most terrible of rapists or murderers. She can be very awkward and doesn't always understand figures of speech or the reason things are done a certain way. Competitions scare her to the point where if she's forced to do it, she'll freeze up or try to run off.
History
It should be obvious by her complex of failing what she's set out to do that the girl had some high pressures when she was young. The herd she was born into was in turmoil, her father (who was every other foal's father) was in trouble of losing his reigning position. A recent battle had nearly crippled him and he struggled to stay on his hooves. There was no opposing stallions, only the mares that he held for the most part captive. Two of the more predominant mares took this chance and attacked him. It wasn't hard to make the massive stallion fall, he actually went over as easy as a fall leaf in a windstorm. Once he was down, the mares made it impossible for him to get back up. Then they left him, just like that. Eudora never let her imagination wander too far wondering what happened to him. She always took the more pleasant route of starvation instead of the more realistic one of being eaten alive by whatever creature came that way.
One of the two mares went on to call the herd her own, leading the band of mares and their mismatched foals to seemingly prosperous areas. There was always the question of what to do when all the foals grew up, especially the colts. Most of the mares wanted their son to take over, since they felt it was right. However, Eudora's mother demanded that she be just as strong as the colts. Whenever the boys would play, Eudora would be sent to join them and told that she'd be punished if she didn't outlast every single one of them, no matter what it was. She'd have to sleep after they did, wake up before they did, play longer and be braver than all of them combined. This was harsh for a timid little filly, especially with some of the other fillies joining in this strange, unspoken pageant. Eudora would face her mother's teeth and on some occasion, hooves, should she fail to be better than the others at absolutely everything.
Throughout the entire ordeal, Eudora managed to block out her mother's growing disdain for the rest of the foals and the constant need to outshine the rest. She couldn't have friends or a worry free day and it was starting to take it's toll on her by the time most of the young ones turned three. Perhaps it was just the childish want to rebel against her mother, but the socially awkward and timid girl mustered up enough courage to run away when her mother was out of sight.
The first few days flew by, mostly because the girl was terrified so she spent most of her time trying to get as far away from her mother as she could. Then, once she was far enough away that it'd be very difficult to find her way back, she realized just what she'd done. It scared her at first; the thought of being alone out in the wilderness made her almost run back screaming for her mother. She knew it was too late though, but it took a few days to grasp and she definitely did not take it in stride. Several times she had run until she was exhausted because she'd heard the distant yelp of some canine. She knew it'd be better to avoid danger, despite how large she had grown over the last few years. So after the third week of this dance-around-the-coyotes, she decided to do her best and learn how to survive.
Of course, this strategy worked. She became so focused on surviving, that she hardly even noticed when a horse passed by. At some point she lost track of just how much she'd grown and was always shocked upon meeting another horse. It didn't help all too much with her laughable social skills. Though she managed to live for another two years, making it just to her fifth birthday when for the first time, she came across a number of other horses.
